What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a very popular surgical procedure that removes pockets of excess fat from various areas of the body including your hips, buttocks, abdomen and waist, thighs, calves, inner knee, upper arms, chin, neck, cheeks, chest and back.

If you’re tired of being held back from your ideal body contour due to stubborn pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise, a traditional liposuction at CAPS will achieve your ideal results.

What is VASER LipoSelection?

VASER LipoSelection is a minimally invasive type of liposuction procedure that uses a low level of ultrasonic energy in order to gently break apart fat cells. Once the fat cells are broken apart, they are then removed from the body with the use of liposuction.

VASER LipoSelection is less invasive than traditional liposuction and stimulates the production of elastin and collagen. This creates a smoother and tighter skin appearance, allowing the muscles to stand out better.

Consulting with our expert plastic surgeons will help you determine which liposuction procedure is best for you.

FAQs

Liposuction

How much does liposuction cost?

The cost of liposuction can range from $2,000 to $8,000 or more, depending on various factors including the type of liposuction, the surgeon performing the procedure, and the type of anesthesia being used.

It's recommended to consult with our board-certified plastic surgeon to determine the appropriate treatment plan for your individual needs and to receive a personalized quote for the cost of the procedure.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that improves your body contours and proportions by removing excess fat deposits. These stubborn fatty deposits are typically those that diet and exercise alone have not been able to improve. While liposuction can be very effective in reducing localized fat deposits, it is important to note that it is not a permanent solution for weight loss.

Liposuction may be used on: the thighs; the hips and buttocks; the abdomen and waist; the upper arms; the back; the inner knee; the chest; the cheeks, chin, and neck; and the calves and ankles.

Is liposuction safe?

Liposuction is a safe procedure when performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon with appropriate training and experience. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications that should be taken into consideration. During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss these risk factors with you and ensure you are well educated on the procedure and recovery. To minimize any risks associated with the procedure, you should carefully follow any preoperative or postoperative instructions from your provider.

How does liposuction work?

The exact details of your liposuction surgery will depend on various factors but before your procedure, you will be administered general or local anesthesia to ensure you’re as comfortable as possible. In general, liposuction works by making small incisions in the skin on the targeted areas of the body. A thin, hollow tube called the cannula is then inserted to break up the stubborn fat cells and suction them out of the body.

Is liposuction permanent?

Liposuction permanently eliminates fat cells in the targeted area. Once the fat cells are removed, they will not grow back in the treated area. However, if a patient gains weight after the procedure, the remaining fat cells in the body can still expand, potentially causing the appearance of the treated area to change. Therefore, to maintain the long-term results of liposuction, it's important to maintain a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and regular exercise.

Does insurance cover liposuction?

Liposuction is considered to be an elective cosmetic procedure and is not typically covered by insurance unless it is deemed medically necessary. However, there may be some exceptions where insurance may partially or fully cover the cost of liposuction. For example, if the liposuction is being performed for reconstructive purposes following trauma or as part of a breast reduction procedure, insurance may cover a portion of the cost.

How long to recover from liposuction?

Liposuction recovery time will vary depending on the extent of the surgery. It is important to carefully follow the post-operative instructions provided by your plastic surgeon to ensure a safe and smooth recovery. A typical liposuction recovery follows the timeline below.

  • 1-2 days after surgery: Patients will experience some pain, swelling and bruising in the treated area. Patients are advised to rest and avoid strenuous activities.

  • 1 week after surgery: Many patients can return to work and light activities although swelling and bruising may still be present. Patients are usually advised to continue wearing compression garments and avoid exercise and other strenuous activities.

  • 2-4 weeks after surgery: Swelling and bruising should start to subside, and patients may gradually begin to resume normal activities. However, patients should still avoid vigorous exercise and activities that could strain the treated area.

  • 4-6 weeks after surgery: Most patients are able to resume normal activities, including exercise, although the treated area may still be tender or sore.

  • 6-12 weeks after surgery: Swelling should continue to decrease, and the treated area should begin to look more toned and sculpted. However, it may take several months for the final results to become fully visible.

Does liposuction leave scars?

Since liposuction is an invasive procedure, there may be some small, well-hidden scars. The scars from liposuction are typically very faint and may fade over time. By carefully following all post-operative instructions, including proper wound care, you can minimize the risk of scarring and ensure optimal healing.

Can you get liposuction in the same area twice?

It is possible to have liposuction performed in the same area twice. Some patients may require a second liposuction procedure in the same area to achieve their desired results. However, it’s important to consult with a plastic surgeon to determine if an additional liposuction procedure is right for you to ensure there are no increase risks of complications.
