Are You a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
If you schedule a consultation, our breast augmentation experts will help you determine if the surgery is for you and if so, create a custom plan to make sure you get the desired results.
We consider the following factors when determining whether a person is an ideal candidate for breast augmentation:
Do you have realistic aesthetic goals?
Everyone has different aesthetic goals, and while we can customize your breast implants to your particular taste and needs, there are limits to how much we can enhance or augment your breasts. For that reason, we use our consultations to explain how we can help every patient given her unique physique and biology.
Are you 18 or older, and are you capable of making an informed decision?
We only conduct breast augmentations on patients that are at least 18 years old, and capable of understanding what the surgery and its recovery entails. We believe everyone should have the body that they feel good in, but put the law and people’s safety first.
Are you in good general health?
In our consultations we attempt to evaluate whether or not you live a relatively active lifestyle, can take care of your own health and do not have any other medical conditions that could interfere with the breast augmentation surgery. While it is a very safe procedure, we take the necessary precautions to identify those who are not fit to undergo surgery.
What Aesthetic Goals Can a Breast Augmentation Procedure Achieve?
On top of helping you feel great about yourself and your body, breast augmentations can meet a wide variety of aesthetic needs. Whether you want more symmetrical, full, or shapely breasts, we can customize your breast implants to your goals. Here are some realistic results from our breast augmentation surgeries:
- Larger breasts
- Breasts with more upper fullness
- Firmer breasts
- More even breasts
- Breasts with a more attractive shape
- Breasts with less sagging
- More proportionate breasts and upper body
- Better-fitting clothing
Breast augmentation surgery does not lift sagging breasts. If your main concern is to correct sagging due to lost volume in the breasts, a breast lift is a more appropriate procedure than a breast augmentation. We can conduct these two surgeries together if appropriate. Our expert physicians at the Columbus, OH clinic are here to help you make that decision based on your desired results.
Health Concerns Before Receiving a Breast Augmentation
While our breast augmentation surgery is very safe, we make sure that our patients are in good general health to reduce the risks involved in any surgery. We recommend getting a blood test, and that you avoid taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs in the week before the procedure, as they can increase bleeding.
Good general health means :
- No untreated infections
- No breast cancer
- Not pregnant
- Not nursing a child, or still in the first six months after giving birth or ceasing to nurse
- Eating a balanced, healthy diet
- Leading a relatively active lifestyle
We believe that those planning a breast augmentation procedure take advantage of this moment to make sure their breasts are in good health as well. We recommend that patients near the age of 40 conduct a mammogram before their breast augmentations to rule out undetected breast tumors. Also, smokers will be expected to quit smoking for several weeks before and after the procedure to reduce risks of complications.
Explaining the Breast Augmentation Procedure
We conduct both saline and silicone breast implant surgeries. We find saline and silicone to be the safest, most state-of-the-art options for a wide range of needs and aesthetic taste.
We are the largest private practice provider of the Mentor Saline and Silicone implants in Central Ohio. Our physicians believe Mentor is the best in the industry for a number of reasons:
- A Johnson and Johnson company, Mentor is the world leader in breast implant manufacturing, research and testing, having adhered to the highest standards of safety for over 30 years.
- Their implants are designed so that they can adapt to the different needs of our clients with respect to personal preference, body type and particular health needs.
- All Mentor implants come with a lifetime replacement policy and a standard limited warranty.
- They are the only company in the world whose implants are made exclusively in the United States.
Saline implants are filled with a salt solution that is similar to what makes up 90% of our body. They are inserted into the body empty and then filled once they are in the body. The implants come in a variety of sizes, shapes and textures. The saline implants are FDA approved, and slightly firmer than gel-filled implants. But you can decide how much volume you’d like, choosing from Classic, Moderate Plus and High Profile (for higher projection of the breasts) which come in shell surface options of smooth or textured.
These round saline implants are often used in breast augmentation surgeries. If the implant leaks, the implant will collapse and the saline will be absorbed and expelled by your body without pain or discomfort. Saline breast implants are firm and symmetrical in shape, and FDA-approved for women age 18 and older for breast augmentation and to women of any age for breast reconstruction surgery.
Our silicone implants, the MENTOR® MemoryGel®brand, are designed to look and feel natural. They have been industry leaders for over 20 years, and have a track record of being incredibly safe and reliable. MENTOR uses the most modern silicone possible, and are pre-filled with Mentor’s silicone gel before insertion into the patient. The gel is cohesive and holds your breast up and together – just like real tissue would. Many people feel that silicone feels and looks more like breast tissue, resulting in more natural-appearing results.
In rare cases, gel has the potential to leak into the breast implant pocket, but the implant will not collapse. We recommend more routine follow-ups with your physician if you choose silicone, as it is important to make sure that the implants are adapting and functioning correctly. Silicone implants are FDA approved for women age 22 and older for breast augmentation and any age for breast reconstruction.
How Does Our Columbus, OH team Conduct Breast Augmentation Procedures?
Our first priority is to make sure that every patient’s breast augmentation procedure is quick, relatively painless and complication-free. The procedure in itself, however, is routine, and our expert surgeons are qualified to not only keep you safe and healthy during and after the surgery, but also give you the results you desire.
To begin the procedure, we apply anesthesia to the patient via intravenous sedation or general anesthesia, depending on which option is deemed appropriate by your physician. Next, we conduct an incision in one of a number of areas where there will be minimized visible scarring such as the armpit, under the breast or around the nipple. The location of the incision depends on the amount of augmentation, anatomy of the patient and preference of the physician and patient. After this, the implant is placed either behind the pectoral muscle or behind the breast tissue. The same factors that determine where the incision is made will determine where the implants are placed. That incision is then closed with layered sutures near the breast tissue and with sutures, tape or adhesives near the skin.
We perform more breast augmentation surgeries than anyone else in Columbus, Ohio and the surrounding areas, and pride ourselves in providing not only the best results, but also a comfortable and safe experience for our clients.
What is it Like to Recover From a Breast Enhancement Surgery?
Once you finish surgery at our Columbus, OH clinic, you are taken to a special recovery room where we will monitor you and make sure you can rest for a few hours before leaving. Your breasts will be wrapped in a gauze with an elastic bandage or support bra to help decrease swelling and provide support. Our physicians and nurses will give you instructions on how to take certain precautions in your first days post-surgery.
We will instruct you in how to clean and apply ointment to the incision and what medications to take to quicken the healing and reduce infection risks. We always schedule a follow-up appointment with the physicians to make sure that your surgery was successful and that there have not been infections or complications. In the next week or two, we may ask you to wear a support bra. We go to great lengths to make sure that our patients feel comfortable and ready to take on the world when they leave.
Timeline A Recovery for CAPS Breast Augmentation Procedures
In the first four days later the surgery, it is typical to experience swelling, slight pain and discomfort. In the first 24 hours there is the most serious risk of bleeding, and our surgeons will generally advise the patient to move the arms to minimize the pain that may come with the spasms that can occur in this period. Patients may experience bruising on the breast and fluid retention.
After the first 2-3 days of recovery the patient can start showering again and even allow liquid on the incision if our surgeons approve. The patient may experience slight swelling as the wounds heal, and pain medications will be prescribed. The pain is usually worse when the implants are placed under the muscle, and it is important that all patients watch for signs of bleeding or infection during these days post-surgery.
Between 10 and 21 days after surgery, the risk of infection and bleeding goes down and the patient will usually be approved for low-impact lower body physical activity: but no upper-body resistance exercise. If a capsule is to form at all, it is likely that it will happen in this period, although pain and swelling will decline significantly. The nerves will begin to wake up and can sometimes cause a sensation of “pins and needles” around the nipple, and it is also normal to feel numbness in the breast.
About 4 weeks after the breast augmentation procedure, pain and swelling is usually completely subsided. The patient can begin to up the ante in terms of higher impact exercise, and can start to do exercises that incorporate the upper body. Your surgeon, however, will tell you exactly how long you should wait to begin these exercises, as each patient is different.
From 6 weeks and onward, the scar tissue starts to relax, softening the initial firmness of the breasts and descending the implants slightly, developing a natural “jiggle.” Swelling will be down to 5-10%, at which point the patient will likely be able to feel that the procedure is completely done.
What Are Implant Displacement Exercises?
To prevent capsular contracture, our surgeons often advise that breast augmentation patients practice implant displacement exercises to prevent the development of scar tissue that leads to hard, misshapen breasts. This is a gentle massaging of the breasts to preserve space around the implants, lessening the likelihood of scar tissue and giving patients the most natural, shapely breasts possible.
However, we often recommend that those with teardrop-shaped or textured implants should not massage their breasts post-surgery because these particular implants are not designed to move. Our dedicated team of surgeons can help guide you in how and when to massage your breasts to help them heal.
What Are the General Risks During and After Breast Augmentation Surgery?
Both silicone and saline breast implants carry a similar set of risks. Although the surgery is very safe, at CAPS we feel that it is important for every patient to understand that complications are not 100% avoidable in any procedure.
Possible risks include:
- A capsular contracture: When this happens, scar tissue can distort the shape of the breast implant and, consequently, the appearance of the patient’s breasts.
- Light to moderate breast pain is sometimes experienced after the recovery period.
- In rare cases, breast implants can cause infection in the patient’s body.
- Sensation on the breasts and around the nipples can be affected, sometimes temporarily losing sensibility.
- In extreme cases, breast implants can leak or rupture.
These complications are rare, though, especially with a team as experienced as ours at CAPS. Nonetheless, all of the aforementioned complications can be corrected through surgery or removing or replacing the implants.
More Information on Ruptured Implants:
Ruptured implants are handled differently depending on whether the patient has used saline or silicone breast implants for her augmentation procedure.
In the case of saline, as we mentioned before, if the breast implant ruptures the implant will simply deflate, but it will cause the breast to change in appearance and shape. The saline solution does not pose any health risk to your body, which will simply absorb the saline. The silicone shell, however, must be removed, and can be replaced with a new and intact implant in the same surgery.
When a silicone implant ruptures, it is more difficult to even perceive that this has occurred, as silicone is often trapped by tissue that encloses the implant. When this happens, we call it a “silent implant.”
Leaked silicone has not been found to cause serious health complications or risks in the long-term. It will not increase the likeliness of breast cancer, affect the patient’s reproductive health or tissue. But it can cause pain and discomfort as well as change in the appearance and shape of the breasts.
When leaking silicone is detected, we recommend to remove the implants and replace them with new ones in the same surgery. But a patient with a breast implant that is not experiencing symptoms may decide not to remove the implant after discussing the benefits and risks with our surgeons.
What If I Decide That I Want My Breast Implants Removed After Undergoing an Augmentation Procedure?
The CAPS team is unique for its combined 50 years of experience in providing the best plastic surgery care and results in Columbus, OH. Our clients are consistently pleased with not only their results, but the care that we provide before, during and after the procedure. Occasionally, however, a patient may come to us with the desire to remove breast implants inserted by the CAPS team or another surgeon. This may be because the patient experienced complications in the procedure with another surgeon, or simply because she does not want them anymore.
Breast implant removal is a simple procedure in which our team is very experienced, and we make sure that all of our patients understand that breast implants are a personal choice and do not need to be permanent.
When breast implants are removed, the implant is simply taken out. If a capsule (hardened scar tissue) has developed around the breasts and is causing problems, that will be removed as well. Removing scar tissue is more complex than simply removing the implants, and the surgery and recovery are longer.
Can I Get a Breast Lift After Getting My Breast Implants Removed?
In the case that a patient wishes to remove the implants, but would like to lift the breasts to adjust their appearance due to age or weight gain, our Columbus, OH team can conduct this procedure in the same surgery in which the implants are removed. In some cases, removal of implants causes previously loose skin to tighten; in any event, our team of surgeons help all patients determine the best option for each individual given her unique body and needs.

We consider our patients “informed” when they understand the benefits and risks of the procedure, which we explain to everyone who schedules a consultation.
