What is eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery, also called a blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that can improve the appearance of your upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, and can rejuvenate the appearance of the area around your eyes. Eyelid surgery can be tailored for you to treat the loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelids, remove excess fatty deposits that can give the upper eyelids a puffy appearance, mitigate bags under the eyes, remedy droopiness of the lower eyelids, or addressing excess skin and fine wrinkles on the lower eyelid.

Is eyelid surgery right for me?

The answer to this question will be based on a number of personal factors. If you’re ready to see if eyelid surgery is right for you, schedule a consultation today.

What to expect for your eyelid surgery

Your first visit

During your consultation, your doctor will take the time to truly understand your unique needs and goals and to help you to determine if eyelid surgery is right for you. Your doctor will also explain the full procedure to you and will ask you several questions including:

  • Why do you want eyelid surgery?

  • What are your expectations for the procedure?

  • What is your desired outcome?

  • Do you have any medical conditions or drug allergies?

  • Are you currently receiving any medical treatments?

  • Have you had any previous surgeries? If so, what were they?

In addition to asking these questions, your plastic surgeon will use your consultation to evaluate your general health status and any pre-existing health conditions or risk factors you may have, discuss your eyelid surgery options, examine and measure your face, take photographs for your medical record, recommend a course of treatment, discuss likely outcomes of eyelid surgery and any risks or potential complications, and answer your questions.

The procedure

Before your eyelid surgery, you may be asked to get lab testing or a medical evaluation, take certain medications or adjust your current medications, stop smoking, and avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements that may increase bleeding.

We will also give you special instructions about what to do the night before and morning of your surgery and regarding your post-operative care and follow-up appointments.

First, you’ll be administered anesthesia. Your plastic surgeon will recommend the anesthesia option that is best for you. Then, you’ll go to sleep while your skilled plastic surgeon and well-trained staff perform eyelid surgery. The exact procedure will vary depending on your unique needs and desired outcomes. Your doctor can walk you through every step of the procedure during your consultation.

After the procedure

Your doctor will give you instructions regarding your post-operative care. Following these instructions will help to ensure that you heal properly and enjoy optimal results.
