Mommy Makeovers: Give Birth to a New You

Family walking outside in tall grass

Your kids. You love them fiercely. But there’s a good chance you don’t love what giving birth to them has done to your body. Unfortunately, no amount of fierce love (or fierce workouts) can bring back your fierce, pre-baby form.

And while sometimes motherhood is about sacrifices, it doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice looking and feeling your best. If less-than-perky breasts and a flabby tummy are some of the mementos from childbirth you’d rather not keep, you might want to consider a mommy makeover at Columbus Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery.

Mommy makeovers are a combination of at least two surgical procedures designed specifically for you. They’re performed after you’re certain you’re done having kids and ideally, after you’re done breastfeeding. Typically, your CAPS board-certified plastic surgeon can perform multiple procedures at the same time, which consolidates your downtime and recovery.

The most common procedures that can be part of a mommy makeover include:

  • Breast augmentation

  • Breast lift

  • Tummy tuck

  • Mini tummy tuck

  • Liposuction

Let’s take a closer look at each one…

If your breasts have lost volume, breast augmentation can address that. Implants can increase or restore the size of your breasts and help your pre-pregnancy clothes fit again. During the procedure, your surgeon will make an incision and place the implant in a pocket underneath the pectoral muscle, or underneath the breast tissue and on top of the pectoral muscle.

If your breasts are saggy or uneven, a breast lift is the ideal solution. Incisions are made, your surgeon repositions and reshapes the breast tissue, and then surgically removes excess skin, adjusting the position of your nipples and areola.

If you want your breasts to be larger as well as less droopy, your plastic surgeon may recommend a breast lift and augmentation.

Take your abdomen from “flabulous” to fabulous with a tummy tuck. Your inner girdle of connective tissue gets stretched during pregnancy, which often results in making your stomach protrude. Excess skin, poor skin elasticity, and fat can all contribute to the problem, too. A tummy tuck removes loose, excess skin and fat, and tightens that inner girdle. If your challenges with your abdomen aren’t as involved, you might be a better candidate for a mini tummy tuck, which is less extensive and typically doesn’t require as much downtime as a traditional tummy tuck. Your CAPS board-certified plastic surgeon will help you determine which procedure is the best fit for you.

If pregnancy made your hips or love handles more than you can handle, you might want to consider body contouring through liposuction, which slims and reshapes specific areas of your body by removing excess fat deposits. While liposuction isn’t a substitute for proper diet and exercise or a treatment for obesity, it does eliminate fat cells in the targeted area for good. That means as long as you maintain your weight, you should maintain most of the contours from your procedure.

So, who’s a good candidate for a mommy makeover? Ideal candidates are at a healthy, stable weight, have realistic expectations about their outcomes, and can take two to three weeks off to recover, keeping in mind that it might be several months before you’ll see final results.

During your one-on-one consultation, your CAPS board-certified plastic surgeon will get to know you and recommend the appropriate procedures for your mommy makeover based on your aesthetic goals and body type.
