Why Hair Thinning Occurs in Women & How to Treat It

Have you noticed your hair thinning or falling out more than normal? You may notice there’s more hair in your brush after combing through it, or the part in your hair looks wider, and your ponytail doesn’t feel thick anymore.

If you’re experiencing any of this, you’re not alone. Hair thinning and loss is so common that nearly half of the female population will experience it before the age of 50. That’s why Columbus Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery is proud to offer a variety of treatment options to restore your hair and help it grow.

What is hair thinning?

Generally, we lose around 100 pieces of hair from our scalp every day. This shedding is part of a natural process where hair will fall out so new hair can grow in. However, when this balance is interrupted, hair may fall out and not grow in, resulting in hair thinning and loss. This can occur gradually or suddenly and can be a result of lifestyle habits, genetics, or certain medical conditions.

The medical term for hair loss is alopecia. There are many different causes of alopecia in women. Hair loss conditions can be divided into the following categories: scarring alopecia, non-scarring alopecia and structural hair disorders.

Two of the most common types of non-scarring alopecia include:

  • Androgenetic alopecia: Also known as Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL) or Female Pattern Baldness, is the most common type. It’s a genetic condition that causes a woman’s hair part to widen and diffuse thinning on the top of the scalp.

  • Telogen effluvium: This can be caused by any significant stressor such as surgery, pregnancy or serious illness that causes disruption in the hair cycle, leading to excessive shedding of telogen hairs.

Why does hair thinning happen to women?

There are many triggers that can cause hair loss including stressful life circumstances, medications, restrictive diets, hormonal shifts, genetics, pregnancy, damaging hair products and inflammatory conditions.

Although any woman can be affected by hair thinning and loss, it is most common for:

  • Women over the age of 40

  • Women who recently gave birth

  • Women who have been taking medications or gone through chemotherapy

  • Menopausal women

Every individual is different, so it’s always best to seek professional care and expertise to understand the cause and how to properly treat it.
