Is Breast Augmentation Right For You?

There is no average breast augmentation patient. Each person's reasons and motivations are as unique as their bodies. That's why we take the time to get to know each patient’s needs, goals, and expectations before we perform a breast augmentation.

Some patients want larger breasts because they’ve always wanted a fuller figure. Others come to us after they have delivered and breastfed their children with the goal of restoring their pre-baby profiles. Still others come to us with the desire of balancing their breasts or of refining their shape.

Behind each unique reason is the story of a person who deserves the confidence that a breast augmentation can help them to gain. Hear what our patient Kate has to say about her breast augmentation experience, then schedule a consultation to see if breast augmentation is right for you.

What To Expect At Your Consultation

Scheduling a consultation is the first step in making an informed decision about your breast augmentation. It's your chance to learn more about the procedure, ask questions, and explore your options with the personal guidance of one of our plastic surgeons.

During your consultation, your doctor will help you to determine if breast augmentation is right for you by examining your medical history and learning about your unique aesthetic goals and expectations for the surgery. You should expect your doctor to ask you:

  • Why do you want breast augmentation?

  • What are your expectations for the procedure?

  • What is your desired outcome?

  • Do you have any drug allergies?

  • What previous medical treatments have you received?

  • Have you had any previous surgeries? If so, what were they?

  • Do you have a family history of breast cancer?

  • What have been the results of any mammograms or previous biopsies you have had?

In addition to asking these questions, your plastic surgeon will use your consultation to discuss your breast augmentation options, examine and measure your breasts, take photographs for your medical record, recommend a course of treatment, discuss likely outcomes of breast augmentation and any risks or potential complications, and answer any questions you may have.

Frequently Asked Questions

Breast Augmentation

Are breast augmentations covered by insurance?

Breast augmentation surgery is considered part of a cosmetic procedure and typically is not covered by health insurance plans. However, in cases that are related to breast cancer, your insurance may cover some, if not all, of your breast reconstruction surgery.

Do breast implants feel real?

Yes! When you are choosing your breast implants at CAPS, we have multiple different shapes and sizes for you to choose from. This ensures you have the exact look and feel you desire!

Do breast implants hurt?

Once healed from surgery, breast implants do not hurt. There is associated muscle tightness and healing discomfort immediately after surgery during the recovery phase.

Do breast implants need to be replaced?

At CAPS, we typically recommend replacing most implants after around 15-20 years. It is important to know that your likelihood of lasting success is high, especially when you work with a skilled plastic surgeon. Below are a few occasions that a follow-up procedure may be necessary.

  • Rupture or deflation: A very rare event in both saline and silicone implants but safe and not toxic to the body if it does occur. In this event, a revision would be necessary.

  • Development of capsule contracture: If thickened scar tissue forms around your breast implant, it can harden and change the position or shape. Although rare, in these instances, another procedure to remove the thickened scar tissue and replace the implants would be necessary.

At Columbus Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery, we want our patients to feel comfortable and confident in the decisions they make regarding surgery. Make sure to do your research on the procedure that interests you as well as find a plastic surgeon with experience in this area.

How are breast implants made?

Saline and silicone implants each have a silicone outer shell. The saline implants are filled with saline solution, which is just a technical term for sterile salt water. Silicone implants are filled with a cohesive silicone polymer. Silicone is thicker and more viscous than salt water, which many women prefer due to the material acting and feeling more like natural breast tissue.

How much does breast augmentation cost?

There are various factors that can influence the cost of breast augmentation surgery, including your anatomy, the time required for your operation, the types of implants, etc. The total cost of surgery includes the cost of surgical procedures, the fee for the operating room, the costs of anesthesia, and the implants themselves. An augmentation generally ranges from $7,600 to $8,500. Other procedures such as liposuction or breast lifting can affect these costs as well.

Is breast augmentation surgery safe?

Every surgery has associated risks; however, breast augmentation is one of the safest and most common plastic surgery procedures performed each year.

What does the recovery timeline for breast augmentation look like?
  • Two to three days after surgery: During this time, the patient will experience slight swelling as the wound heals.

  • Ten to 21 days after surgery: Patients are usually permitted low-impact lower body physical activity at this time, but are still advised against upper body resistance exercise and any straining or lifting over 10 pounds.

  • Three to four weeks after surgery: Pain and swelling have likely completely subsided. Patients can begin to participate in higher impact exercises and can begin exercises that incorporate the upper body. As each patient is different, it is important to check with your physician to see exactly how long you should wait to perform these exercises.

  • Six weeks after surgery: The implants have likely dropped from their initial position and developed a more natural shape. At this point, swelling should be down to 5-10% and patients will likely feel that the healing is nearly entirely complete.

What health requirements must I meet before having a breast augmentation?

While breast augmentation surgery is very safe, there are risks involved in any surgery. To reduce these risks, we require our patients to be in good general health before undergoing surgery. In addition, we recommend that most prospective patients get a blood test and avoid taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs the week before the procedure.

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a very common cosmetic surgery, and the reasons patients choose to have this surgery are as varied and unique as they are. At our state-of-the-art facility in Columbus, Ohio, we perform hundreds of breast augmentations each year, and we’ve never performed two identical procedures. Whatever your reasons for pursuing breast augmentation and your aesthetic goals and expectations for the procedure may be, our skilled plastic surgeons will work to get you there.

What should I expect after my breast surgery?

Following the post-operative instructions is absolutely vital for the success of your surgery. These instructions will include ensuring that your surgical incisions are not subjected to excessive force, abrasion, or motion during your recovery. Your doctor will also instruct you regarding the proper care of the surgical site, the use of medications to aid healing and reduce the potential for infection, and your overall follow-up care. You may also be asked to get a mammogram to aid in detecting future changes in your breast tissue.

What will happen during my breast augmentation?

Once you are administered anesthesia, you’ll go to sleep while your skilled plastic surgeon and well-trained staff perform the breast augmentation. The exact procedure will vary depending on your unique needs and desired outcomes. Your doctor can walk you through every step of the procedure when you meet prior to your breast augmentation.

What will my results be like?

With the skilled plastic surgeons at CAPS, you can be confident that your breast augmentation will be performed with the precision that is required to obtain optimal results. We’re proud to have helped thousands of women get the results they deserve. See results.

When do you shower after breast augmentation?

You can typically shower 48 hours after your breast augmentation surgery depending on your surgeon’s exact post-operative instructions. Refrain from submerging in a tub or pool for at least 4 weeks.

Which breast implants are the best?

This is a very individual decision. During your consultation, your plastic surgeon will help you determine which implant will be best for your individual goals and body measurements.

Are breast augmentation consultations free?

At CAPS, we take great pride in the attention and individualization we provide for each patient. There is a fee associated with our consultations; however, it will be applied to your surgery.
